Toennies

TOENNIES represents more than seven decades of development in the field of neurophysiological diagnostics thus being our deepest foundation in this part of medical business. In 1932 Jan Friedrich Toennies (“Tönnies” in German language and letters) developed the very first ink-writing EEG machine for Dr. Berger whose discovery of the “Electroencephalogram” was recognized worldwide two years later. Together with Brian Matthews he also designed one of the first diffential amplifiers that same year before he spent three years at the Physiology lab of H. S. Gasser who was the director of the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research at that time. In 1937 Toennies built the first sub-sensation rotary chair for Professor Richard Jung, founding president of the German Society for Clinical Neurophysiology. In 1949 the company named TOENNIES KG was founded and integrated into the Erich Jaeger GmbH in 1987.

In 1994 with the TOENNIES NeuroScreen one of the first truly Windows-based EMG systems was launched to the market and quickly became the best-selling instrument of its kind in Germany.

After 12 very successful years the NeuroScreen products were retired in 2006. While the support of all existing installations continues, the tradition of developing world-class equipment for neurophysiological diagnostics is carried on by VIASYS Healthcare and its Nicolet and Medelec/TECA products.
